- a famous novel (1826) by the US writer James Fenimore Cooper. It was one of his Leatherstocking Tales about 18th-century life on the American frontier. It tells the story of Hawkeye, who has grown up with Native American Mohican people after his European parents were killed. Film versions were made in 1936 and in 1992.
