- (1888-1965) a British Labour Party politician who held several senior government positions. As Minister of Transport, he established London Transport in 1931. During the Second World War, he was Home Secretary and from 1945 to 1951 he was Leader of the House of Commons. He was Foreign Secretary for a short period in 1951 and deputy leader of the Party from 1951 to 1955.
