- (1919-65) a US singer, especially of love songs, with a soft and pleasant voice. He was also an excellent piano player. He was the first African American to have a programme on radio (1948-9) and television (1956-7). His most successful songs included Mona Lisa (1950) and Rambling Rose (1962).
