John Greenleaf Whittier

- (1807-92) a US poet and journalist who supported the campaign to free American slaves. Whittier's work, most of which is about New England, includes Legends of New England (1831) and In War Time and Other Poems (1864). Among his best-known poems is Snow-bound (1866).
