Newport

- a city in the US state of Rhode Island. It is on Aquidneck Island on the Atlantic coast. It was famous for the Newport Jazz Festival each year from 1954 until the festival moved to New York in 1972. The Newport Folk Festival has been held there since 1959. Newport was settled in 1639 and became a place of safety for Quakers and Jews. It was one of the state's two capitals until 1900. It contains many large houses built by rich people in the 19th century. The America's Cup races were held there from 1851 to 1953.
