  1. the first novel (1811) by Jane Austen, in which she creates a clever comedy about the importance of money and marriage to the English upper middle class. It is the story of the Dashwood family, in particular two sisters, Elinor, who is very sensible, and Marianne, who is much more emotional. They fall in love with two men but then discover that they are both engaged to be married already. When Edward, the man loved by Elinor, loses both his wealth and the woman he is engaged to marry, he is happy to marry Elinor, the woman he really loves. Willoughby, however, the man loved by Marianne, leaves her to marry a rich woman. She is sad for a time, but finally marries somebody else.
