)- a desert in south-eastern California consisting of low, bare hills and wide, flat valleys. Its area is about 15 000 square miles/38 850 square kilometres. Death Valley is at the northern end and the Joshua Tree National Monument at the southern end. The Mojave Desert is part of the Great Basin region that covers parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon and Idaho.
