Sherlock Holmes
/ˌʃɜːlɒk ˈhəʊmz/
/ˌʃɜːrlɑːk ˈhəʊmz/
- a private detective in the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle CultureHolmes is able to solve crimes and mysteries using his powers of observation and deduction (= logical thought), sometimes without leaving his flat in Baker Street, and often to the surprise of the police and his friend Dr Watson. People often say, ‘Elementary, my dear Watson’, when they think that a problem is easy to solve, although Holmes never actually says this in any of the stories. He is often shown wearing a special type of hat called a deerstalker and smoking a curved pipe. He also plays the violin and sometimes takes drugs. The Sherlock Holmes stories are still very popular and have been filmed many times. “It is quite a three-pipe problem, and I beg that you won't speak to me for fifty minutes.”
