- (c. 1097-1154) the king of England from 1135 to 1154. He was the grandson of William the Conqueror and became king even though he had agreed that his cousin Matilda had the right to the throne. He spent much of his period as king resisting her attempts to become queen, and finally agreed that her son Henry II would become king when he died.
