- a town in Belgium near which three separate battles (1914, 1915 and 1917) were fought in the First World War. In the first, the British Expeditionary Force suffered terrible losses, the second involved the first use of poisonous gas as a weapon by the Germans, and the third resulted in the deaths of over half a million men.
