- William Hubbs Rehnquist (1924-2005) the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (1986-2005). Before that he was the Chief Legal Counsel for the US Department of Justice (1969-71) and a judge on the Supreme Court (1971-86). He was appointed Chief Justice by Ronald Reagan, and under his leadership the court became more conservative (= opposed to much political and social change). John Roberts was appointed to replace him.
