- (1887-1968) a US writer of novels, short stories and plays. Her long novels often tell stories spread over many years. So Big (1924), about rich families in Chicago, won the Pulitzer Prize, Giant (1952) was about Texas, and Show Boat (1926), about a Southern family, became a successful Broadway musical play. All three were made into films. Ferber also wrote plays with George Kaufmann, including Dinner at Eight (1932).
