Uphill lies cragged headland, machine gun roosts, bulwarks of stacked logs and the terra-cotta rooftops of a village below a crumbling fortress.

But it shares a peninsula with Olympic national park, where pristine forests and hot springs give way to cragged peaks.

At times we swam a foot or two above the cragged shelves of submerged rock, as if soaring over canyons.
