Summer training throughout all four years is mandatory, starting with basic seamanship and military skills during "plebe summer" leading into freshman year.

The ship has been used as a classroom for Coast Guard Academy cadets, who received navigation, engineering and seamanship training aboard the vessel.

There was great emphasis at Gordonstoun on learning seamanship, as it encouraged teamwork.
