Use the word tormented to describe a person who agonizes over something. When you have a terrible decision to make, one that will end up hurting someone, you can say that you're tormented.
If you're terribly worried about your grandfather's heart surgery, you might have a tormented expression on your face as you sit in the hospital waiting room. A middle school student whose best friend is ignoring her could also be described as tormented. The adjective is especially good for talking about a mental pain or anguish, and its ultimate root is the Latin word torquere, "to twist."
