adj

To be autistic is to have a disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate with others. Some people who are autistic are extremely intelligent, while others have trouble learning.
Use the adjective autistic to describe someone with the medical condition called autism. Some autistic people are severely disabled, while others have only small challenges. Autistic traits include being withdrawn, socially unaware, and in some cases having extraordinary abilities in music or math. It's not yet known what causes someone to be autistic. The word itself comes from the 1912 German term Autismus, a combination of the Greek autos, "self," and the adjectival ending istic.
