The Kirchner carving was inspired by his frequent visits to Germany’s Ethnographical Museum Dresden to learn from Cameroon sculpture.

With friends he originated the artists' group Die Brücke — the Bridge — and they frequented the city's Ethnographical Museum to learn from African and Oceanic art.
