With its bona fides established, the Eightfold Way led to quarks, gluons and ultimately the Standard Model, a chart with its own holes to fill.

It is believed that this force is carried by another spin-1 particle, called the gluon, which interacts only with itself and with the quarks.

Both experiments melt atomic nuclei together into a liquid-like soup of quarks and gluons, but each looks at different energy scales.
