In New Delhi, the well-known muckraking magazine Tehelka was forced to cease operations temporarily in the early aughts, after becoming the target of governmental investigations.

Amnesty has taken up the cases of such protesters as the art group Pussy Riot, in Russia, or the muckraking journalist Khadija Ismayilova, in Azerbaijan.

The magazine won a prestigious George Polk Award for reporting that year, with judges citing its “explosive revival of the great muckraking tradition.”
