: any of several glycosides or mixtures of glycosides obtained from African apocynaceous plants of the genera Strophanthus and Acocanthera: as
a. also strophanthin-K [strophanthin-K from Strophanthus kombé, plant from which it is produced] : a bitter very toxic crystalline steroidal glycoside C36H54O14 from the seeds and bark of an east African woody vine (Strophanthus kombé) that yields strophanthidin, cymarose, and glucose on hydrolysis and that is used similarly to digitalis and in Africa as an arrow poison — called also k-strophanthin
b. also strophanthin-G [strophanthin-German from Strophanthus gratus, plant from which it is produced] : ouabain
