: the art or practice of ringing a set of tuned bells in continually varying order in such a way as to avoid (1) shifting the place of any one bell in the striking order by more than one step at each change and (2) repeating any order before completing the whole series — used in strict terminology of the ringing of hung tower bells by a team with one man assigned to each bell; called also peal ringing; see peal |
