1. : a photomechanical process for making prints directly from a hardened film of gelatin or other colloid, the sensitized film being exposed under a reversed negative, desensitized, and then soaked in glycerin and salt water to cause swelling in the parts that have not been exposed to light, the swelled parts becoming ink-repellent and the unswelled parts ink-receptive, thereby forming a printing surface that functions on the lithographic principle — called also photogelatin process
