: any of a class of complex phosphoric ester lipids (as the lecithins, cephalins, sphingomyelins, lipositol) that are found in all living cells in association with depot fats especially in active tissues (as nerve tissue) and that on hydrolysis yield phosphoric acid, fatty acids, a polyhydric alcohol (as glycerol or inositol), and usually a nitrogen base (as choline or ethanolamine) — called also phospholipid
