[ad. mod.L. stegnōticus, ad. Gr. στεγνωτικός, f. στεγνοῦν to render costive, to stop bleeding, f. στεγνός watertight, costive, f. στέγ-ειν to cover.]
a. adj. Of a medicine: Adapted to arrest diarrhœa, flow of blood, or other discharges; astringent, styptic.
b. n. A ‘stegnotic’ medicine.
