Stephanian, a. Geol.|stɪˈfeɪnɪən| [ad. F. stéphanien (A. de Lapparent Traité de Géol. (ed. 3, 1893) 819), f. Stephan-us, latinized form of Saint-Etienne, name of a city in central France where it is represented: see -ian.] Of, pertaining to, or designating the uppermost division of the Carboniferous in Europe, especially where represented by coalbearing formations.
