deficit|ˈdɛfɪsɪt, ˈdiːfɪsɪt| [a. F. déficit (1690 in Hatzf.), a. L. dēficit ‘it is wanting, there is wanting’ (from dēficĕre: see deficient), formerly used in inventories, etc., to designate things wanting.] A falling short, a deficiency; the amount by which a sum of money, or the like, falls short of what is due or required; the excess of expenditure or liabilities over income or assets.
