streptomycete Bacteriology.|strɛptəʊˈmaɪsiːt| [f. mod.L. Streptomycetes, pl. of Streptomyces, generic name (Waksman & Henrici 1943, in Jrnl. Bacteriol. XLVI. 339), f. strepto- + Gr. µύκης fungus.] A bacterium of the genus Streptomyces, which belongs in the family Streptomycetaceæ of spore-forming, mould-like bacteria and comprises aerobic forms that grow as branching filaments, form spores in chains, and occur chiefly as saprophytes in soil.
