diaphorase Biochem.|daɪˈæfəreɪs, -eɪz| [a. G. diaphorase (Adler, von Euler & Günther 1938, in Arkiv f. Kemi XII. B. liv. 4), f. Gr. διάϕορ-ος different + -ase.] A flavoprotein enzyme reported to catalyse the reduction of dyes by diphosphopyridine nucleotide.
1938Brit. Chem. Abstr. 1048 Diaphorase... Top and bottom yeasts have the same diaphorase activity. 1939E. Adler et al. in Nature 15 Apr. 641/2 We have used the name ‘diaphorase’ to designate the enzyme which catalyses the transport of hydrogen from dihydrocodehydrogenase I (CoH2I) to acceptors like methylene/blue or cytochrome. 1966S. P. Colowick et al. in Florkin & Stotz Comprehensive Biochem. XIV. i. 78 The biological significance of the diaphorase activity..is vague, at best, but it may prove useful in understanding the mechanism of hydrogen transfer. 1968A. White et al. Princ. Biochem. (ed. 4) xvii. 366 The diaphorase activity initially reported has proved to be the lipoyl dehydrogenase described above; diaphorase activity, therefore, is entirely artifactual. |
