Sturt, n.4|stɜːt| The name of Charles Sturt (1795–1869), Australian explorer, used attrib. or in the possessive in Sturt('s) (desert) pea to designate a plant collected by him in 1844, Clianthus formosus, a trailing perennial herb of the family Leguminosæ, native to desert regions of Western Australia and bearing racemes of red or white flowers blotched with black at the base.
