ranunculin, n. Biochem.|ræˈnʌŋkjʊlɪn| [f. ranunculus n. + -in1.] A glycoside, produced by various species of buttercup, esp. Ranunculus bulbosus, which if eaten may be metabolized to give the toxic vesicant protoanemonin.
1951Hill & van Heyningen in Biochem. Jrnl. XLIX. 332/2 When the tissues are crushed the protoanemonin is liberated enzymically from a glucosidic precursor in the plant. The glucoside itself..is stable both as a solid and in aqueous solution. This substance..we propose to call ranunculin, as it has been obtained from several species of Ranunculus. 1953Proc. Brit. Weed Control Conf. I. 256 All three species [Ranunculus bulbosus, R. acris and R. repens] contain a glycoside, ranunculin. 1971Science 26 Feb. 763/1 The innocuous glycoside ranunculin, found in buttercups,..breaks down to release the aglycone protoanemonin. |
