‖ ranz-des-vaches|rɑ̃(s) de vaʃ| Also † rens de vache, erron. -vach. [Swiss dial. of Fribourg, f. ranz, of doubtful origin and meaning + ‘of the cows’.] One of the melodies peculiar to Swiss herdsmen, usually played on an Alpine horn, and consisting of irregular phrases made up of the harmonic notes of the horn.
