distressed, ppl. a. (dɪˈstrɛst, poet. -ˈɛsɪd) Also 6–9 distrest. [f. prec. + -ed1.] a. Afflicted with pain or trouble; sorely troubled; in sore straits. Applied spec. to a person living in impoverished circumstances.
