doner kebab|ˈdɒnə(r) kəˌbæb, also ˈdəʊnə(r)| Also döner kebab. [a. Turkish döner kebap, f. döner ppl. a. turning, rotating (f. dönmek to turn) + kebap kebab.] A Turkish dish which consists of slices of lamb or mutton, layered with herbs and spices on a vertical spit and roasted as it revolves against a tall narrow grill. As the surface is cooked the meat is sliced thinly downwards and served, often with pita. Also ellipt. as doner. The dish is also prepared (often with slightly different ingredients) outside Turkey, esp. for sale in restaurants, etc.
