acroblast Biol.|ˈækrəblɑːst, -æ-| [f. acro- + -blast.] A body in the spermatid from which arises the acrosome. An earlier sense ‘tissue of the germinal wall’ (after G. akroblast, J. Kollmann) was short-lived.
1907H. D. King in Amer. Jrnl. Anat. VII. 348 This body is undoubtedly concerned in the formation of the acrosome of the spermatozoön, and therefore I suggest for it the name acroblast as somewhat more appropriate than ‘chromatoid Nebenkörper’. 1958New Scientist 13 Nov. 1272/2 The acroblasts..have an onion-like layered membrane structure. 1963E. V. Cowdry et al. Special Cytology (ed. 2) III. 1758 The Golgi bodies and idiozome material have collected at one side of the nucleus to form the acroblast. |
