[a. mod.Du. drossaard, a transformation (through drossaet, drossaert, Kilian, 1599) of MDu. drossâte = MLG. drossête, drotzête (mod.LG. droste, Du. drost), MHG. truhtsæ̂ȥe, OHG. *truhtsâȥȥo, truhsâȥȥo, trutsâȥo:—OTeut. type *druhtisæ̂tjon-, f. druhti-, truhti-, people, company, retinue + sæ̂tjon- one who sits; hence, ‘he who sits or presides at the meals of the druht’.
