ebullism|ˈɛbəlɪz(ə)m| [f. L. ēbullīre (see ebullience): see -ism.] The formation of bubbles in body fluids as a result of reduced environmental pressure.
1956J. E. Ward in Jrnl. Aviation Med. XXVII. 439/1 The term ‘ebullism’ is introduced to describe the phenomenon of vaporization of body fluids at low atmospheric pressures and at body temperatures. 1962F. I. Ordway et al. Basic Astronautics xii. 460 At 12 miles there is another functional border. Here the atmospheric pressure is so low, 47 mm Hg, that it equals the water vapor pressure of the body's fluids at body temperature and ebullism occurs. 1974Encycl. Brit. Macropædia I. 143/1 Ebullism, or boiling of body fluids, occurs immediately after exposure to altitudes above 63,000 feet and may significantly increase hypoxic effects. |
