[ad. Gr. εἰρηνάρχης, f. εἰρήνη peace + ἄρχειν to rule. (In English Latin eirenarcha is used for ‘justice of the peace’.)]
An officer charged with preserving the public peace. Hence eireˈnarchical a., having the function of an eirenarch. ˈeirenarchy (see quot.).
