† taˈrette Obs. rare. Also 4 ˈtarrit. [a. OF. *tarete, = taride (13th c. in Godef.), = med.L. tarīda, tarēta ‘navis onerariæ species, eadem quæ Tartana vocitata, ut quidam volunt’ (Du Cange), a. Arab. tarīdah ‘actuaria navis’; cf. med. Gr. ταρίδος = δρόµων (ibid.).] A kind of ship of burden or merchant vessel of the Middle Ages. Cf. tartan n.2
