energid Biol.|ɛˈnɜːdʒɪd| [ad. G. energide (J. Sachs 1892, in Flora LXXV. 57), f. energie energy: see -id2.] The nucleus of a cell together with its active cytoplasm regarded as a vital unit.
1897Nat. Sci. Dec. 393 We may introduce that change from the word cell to that of energid (Sachs). Ibid., The distinguishing characteristic of an energid is the living element (protoplasm and nucleus), whilst that of a cell is the membrane. 1900I. B. Balfour tr. von Goebel's Organ. Plants i. i. 24 A polyergic plant is either an energid-colony or cœnobium (cellular or non-cellular) in which..each energid is capable of living for itself; or the energids exhibit a division of labour and..form an energid-dominion. 1960L. Picken Organization of Cells x. 444 It is by no means the case, that mitosis and cytoplasmic cleavage are inseparable phenomena, or the formation of a polynuclear energid an exceptional event. 1965Bell & Coombe tr. Strasburger's Textbk. Bot. 14 It can be envisaged that each nucleus has its own volume of protoplasm. The term ‘energid’ has been suggested for these physiological units lacking morphological delimitation. |
