L. insecta: see insect. Occurring with sense ‘insect’ in many scientific compounds of modern formation, as entoˈmogenous a. Bot. [Gr. -γενής born, produced + -ous], having its growth in the body of insects. enˈtomolite, Geol. [Gr. λίθος stone], a fossil insect. entoˈmometer [Gr. µέτρον measure], an instrument for measuring the parts of insects. entoˈmophagan, Zool. [Gr. ϕαγ-εῖν to eat + -an], one of the Entomophaga or insect-eaters—in mammals, a division of the Marsupialia, in insects of the Hymenoptera. entoˈmophagous a. [Gr. ϕαγ-εῖν to eat + -ous], insect-eating. entoˈmophilous a. Bot. [Gr. ϕίλ-ος friend + -ous], applied to plants in which fertilization is effected through the agency of insects. entoˈmostracan a. Zool. and Geol. [Gr. ὄστρακ-ον shell + -an], of or belonging to the Entomostraca, one of the orders of the Crustacea (see quot.); also as n. entoˈmostracous a.
