fenster Geol.|ˈfɛnstə(r)| [G., lit. window.] An opening or ‘window’ eroded through an older stratum in a region of overfolding or overthrusting, exposing a younger stratum beneath.
1925Bull. Virginia Geol. Surv. xxv. 45 Occurrences, where the erosion of the older, overlying rocks has exposed the younger or underlying rocks, have generally been called fensters. 1933W. H. Bucher Deform. Earth's Crust vii. 176 This is beautifully shown on the map by the ‘embayments’ and ‘fensters’ of Palaeozoic formations. 1939A. K. Lobeck Geomorphol. xvii. 605 So called windows or fensters are produced by the erosion of plateau areas, so that the youngest strata of an under⁓lying nappe are exposed at the bottom of the valley thus formed. 1954W. D. Thornbury Princ. Geomorphol. x. 273 In the early stages of dissection of a nappe, erosion may penetrate the overthrust mass and locally expose patches of the younger rocks below it. Such exposures are called fensters or windows. |
