Tollens Chem.|ˈtɒlənz| [The name of B. C. G. Tollens (1841–1918), German chemist.] Tollens'(s) reagent: a solution of ammoniacal silver nitrate and sodium hydroxide, used as a test for aldehydes with which it reacts to give a silver precipitate; so Tollens' test (described by Tollens in Ber. d. deut. Chem. Ges. (1882) XV. 1828).
