fluoxetine, n. Pharmacol. Brit. |fluːˈɒksɪtiːn|, U.S. |fluˈwɑksətin| [‹ flu- (in fluoro- comb. form) + ox- (in oxy- comb. form1) + -etine (perhaps > n.) + -ine (in amine n.)).] A compound which selectively inhibits the uptake of serotonin in the brain and is given orally (as the hydrochloride) for the treatment of depression; N-methyl-3-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-3-phenylpropylamine, C17H18F3NO. A proprietary name for this drug is Prozac n.
