Compl.), trieve (c 1275), also truive, trueve, true; = Pr. treva, treg(u)a, Sp., It. tregua, med.L. tregua, treuga, treugua, Com. Romanic type *treuwa (Darmesteter), from Germanic. In OF. often, in Eng. always, in pl. treves (cf. unes triuwes, Froissart). Ultimately the same word as truce (ME. trewes pl. of trewe), q.v. for its further etymology.] = truce.
