[a. mod.L. generic name Fusarium (H. F. Link 1809, in Magaz. Ges. Naturf. Freunde III. 10), f. L. fusus spindle: see -ary1, and cf. med.L. fusarius (Du Cange).]
Any of various hyphomycetous fungi of the genus Fusarium, members of which are responsible for various wilting diseases of plants. Freq. used attrib. (esp. as fusarium wilt, fusarium rot), and occas. absol., to designate these diseases, or the infestations which cause them.
