tropomyosin Biochem.|trɒpəʊ-, trəʊpəʊˈmaɪəsɪn| [f. tropo- + myosin.] Any of a group of crystallizable proteins related to myosin; esp. one found together with troponin in the thin filaments of myofibrils which is instrumental in the mechanism of muscle contraction.
1946K. Bailey in Nature 23 Mar. 369/1 The exact relation of tropomyosin to myosin itself is equally obscure, but the analytical and structural similarities indicate that it is a species of myosin differing mainly in the length of the polypeptide chain. In proposing the present name, we have deemed it desirable to retain the word ‘myosin’ and to add a prefix which suggests this specific relationship. 1973Nature 5 Oct. 235/3 The finding of non-muscle tropomyosins, of course, raises more questions than it answers. 1979Sci.
