‖ tupsee E. Ind.|ˈtʌpsiː| Also tupsy, -ey, and more etymologically spelt tăpsī. [a. Hindī tapsī, more fully tapsī machh:—Skr. tapasya matsya, i.e. fish produced from heat, or in the spring season Phalguna (Feb. and March) when the mango blossoms.] A fish of the genus Polynemus, allied to the mullet, 8 or 9 inches long, found in the Ganges and Irrawaddy; a variety from the estuaries of the Hooghly is considered a great delicacy at Calcutta. Also called mango-fish.
