gendarmery, ‖ gendarmerie|dʒɛnˈdɑːmərɪ, ʒɑ̃darməri| Also gens darmery, gens d'armerie. [a. F. gendarmerie (f. gendarme gendarme), first recorded in the 16th cent. The forms with gens are not recognized in French dictionaries.] 1. Hist. A corps or squadron of cavalry, esp. in the old French army, or of certain forces raised in England in the reign of Edward VI.
