a. The name given to a knee-like bend or curved part in various organs of the body.
1854Mayne Expos. Lex., Genu, Anat., the knee. 1882Syd. Soc. Lex., Corpus geniculatum externum, a mass of grey matter..lying on the outer side of the genu of the tractus opticus. 1885Ibid. s.v., Geniculate ganglion, a small, reddish, triangular ganglion at the genu of the facial nerve.
b. In certain mod.L. terms, with the sense ‘knee’, as genu recurvatum, ‘a backward curvation of the knee-joint’ (Dorland 1900); genu valgum, knock-knee; genu varum, bow-legs.
In classical Latin valgus, vārus meant respectively ‘bow-legged’, ‘knock-kneed’.
