†1. An agreement made in return. Obs.
c1449Pecock Repr. iii. xviii. 397 As bi boond and withoute eny reconvencioun or couenant of bond expressid or priueli understonde forto ȝeue aȝen.
2. Law. A counter-charge; a counter-action brought against the plaintiff by the defendant in a suit. † Also transf. in general use.
1538Extr. Aberd. Burgh Rec. (1844) 158 My lord prowest..humely menis, schawis, and, be the way of reconuentioune, complenis [etc.]. 1629Mabbe tr. Fonseca's Dev. Contempl. 423 Hee vnderstood by sinne in that place, the sinne of adulterie, for otherwise..the reconuention had not beene so strong and forcible. 1633Ames Agst.
